Exciting news for Walthamstow!

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London announced towards the end of May 2018 that here will be a £15million revamp for Walthamstow Central Tube Station. The funding from TFL's Growth Funding Scheme is conditional on the basis that the Walthamstow Mall redevelopment (involving £200million) will be approved. Mr Kahn has been in talks with the council, the Greater London Authority and Transport for London.

The big redevelopment of The Mall has divided Walthamstow in two. Some are in favour of the new works and see it as a significant advancement but others oppose the 'gentrification' of E17 and the loss of public space. The controversy surrounding the subject is similar to when the community were grappling with the Mini Holland scheme.

As we have previously covered in an April 2018 article, Waltham Forest has been dubbed the 'First Borough of Culture' for 2019. We are already seeing some of this impact in Walthamstow as The Essex Brewery conversion proposes to bring 158 new flats nearby the William Morris Gallery. In an Evening Standard Homes & Property article it is noted how for a 'small fee' locals can rent a studio space which will be an attractive proposition for artists and creatives, many of whom may have been priced out of inner East London and able to access Help to Buy.

Other exciting news is this month's Walthamstow Garden Party on Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 July. Watch the trailer here. For more details please read our other featured article this month.
