What does Walthamstow's new mural say about our community?

This is Walthamstow down to a T. With the backing of local arts group Wood Street Walls and in the spirit of rejuvenation that has characterised Walthamstow in recent years, the non-descript side of a building (the fishmongers) on the corner of Vernon Road will soon be an artwork by local artist Zarah Hussain. The artist has arrived at four striking designs inspired by islamic geometry but she wants locals to have the final say.

The community involvement of the project is inline with Ramadan and Eid celebrations. Iain Duncan Smith, the MP for the nearby areas of Chingford and Woodford Green recently said 'Don't let it divide us', referring to the recent attack on worshippers who were leaving evening prayers after breaking the Ramadan fast in Seven Sisters. The timing of Hussain's latest artwork couldn't be more poignant as today more than ever we need to celebrate the beauty of Walthamstow's cultural and religious community.
